What a day out actually looks like.
Told by the people who were there — the families, the staff, the ones who came along.
She asked if the giraffe would remember her.
Maya is nine, and she had spent most of the spring indoors. Her nurse put her name forward on a Tuesday. Three weeks later she was standing in the open with her mom and her little brother, holding out a handful of leaves and being very, very still.
The giraffe took its time. When it finally leaned down, nobody said anything for a few seconds. Then Maya turned around, still holding her hand out, and asked whether it would remember her if she came back. Her mom says she has told the story to everyone she has met since.
